Vincent will not forget the past

- Richard Tanner

VINCENT KOMPANY admits memories of how Manchester United blew the Premier League title in 2012 concern him.

Manchester City are in a commanding lead but City’s long-serving captain recalls how United threw away an eight-point lead with six games to go to hand them the title five years ago.

City also won it in 2014 after leaders Liverpool faltered. So they go to Newcastle tonight with Kompany saying: “I don’t know if everyone will remember but it was six games left and we were eight points behind.

“That’s why I’m always the first guy to come in and say, ‘No guys, we can’t take the foot off the gas’.

“We push, we push, we push, and no one has the right to let their guard down.

“It’s the first time we’ve been ahead like this. It’s just that thing where you still feel it’s a bit too early to draw any conclusions.

“We just have to keep it up. It’s the first thing you think about.

“I was saying when you’re on such a run you almost want to put it aside straight away and think about the next one, because you know how little it takes to lose that special feeling.

“So we head to the game in Newcastle with a happy feeling but with a sense of duty.”

Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez believes this City side will have to win at least three league titles to be considered great.

He said: “It’s too early to say. We will have to see at the end of the season.

“It’s a great team, yes. If they continue winning and playing well, people will be talking about them.

“But the main thing is to be consistent for years, not just to win one or two years. You have to be consistent.”
