Cruise control

- By Nick Dalton

TAKE a cruise with Saga and you can relax – truly. From the moment you close your front door to the moment you get home, it’s all there. It’s not just stepping off the ship in a fabulous Mediterranean port (perhaps Barcelona or Venice) or cruising through a fabulous fjord, it’s the whole experience – and great value, too. Saga sails from Dover, Southampton and Portsmouth, so no airports to contend with – and there’s a free, return chauffeur service to the port if you live (as most people do) within 250 miles, so not even a train, taxi or car journey to think about. If you live farther away you get a choice of rail travel or car parking at the port.

There’s so much included that you won’t normally find elsewhere – wine with lunch and dinner, free Wi-Fi, free dining even in speciality restaurants and 24-hour room service, something that can push up the cost of your trip on many cruises. You also won’t have to pay out every time you leave the ship.

There’s a free shuttle bus, where permitted, in each port to take you to the nearest town centre so you can enjoy the place you arrive at – rather than having to pay for an optional excursion.

Even more, all cruises on Saga Sapphire, for 720 passengers, are all-inclusive for 2018, meaning you don’t have to put your hand in your pocket each time you visit one of the bars (although Saga’s drinks prices are low anyway compared to many other companies).

Saga Sapphire, looking grand in her blue-hulled livery, has cruises from only £499 for a four-night trip to Amsterdam. Other cruises at excellent prices take in the UK, Ireland, spots across the Channel as well as farther afield, to Norway, Italy, even a transatlantic trip to Canada’s east coast and back. There are also intimate cruises on 449-passenger Saga Pearl II – regular guests are rushing to get a place for her final season next winter. But, in 2019, there comes a fitting replacement, brand new Spirit of Discovery, bringing boutique hotel elegance to her 999 passengers. Bookings – with great discounts – are already being taken for cruises to the fjords, Canaries and more from next summer.

To take one more worry off your mind, Saga prices also include travel insurance – and you get a discount if you don’t need it.

You can also relax as there are no hidden charges. Some cruise companies add a service charge, often up to 18 per cent, to every drink you buy as well as a daily gratuity of £10 or more to your bill – which can mean the final memory of your holiday is an unpleasant moment with the credit card. Some companies also add port charges.

With Saga you don’t even have to worry about driving home – your chauffeur will be waiting to provide you with the perfect end to the perfect trip…
