Pochettino could be the Real deal

- By Darren Witcoop

MAURICIO Pochettino has refused to rule out the prospect of managing Real Madrid should they come calling. The Tottenham manager is believed to be high up in the thoughts of Real and his stock only soared after his Spurs side finished above them in their Champions League group stages this season.

Real’s Zinedine Zidane is once again battling to keep his job after Wednesday’s shock Copa del Rey exit to Leganes. Pochettino says he is committed to Spurs with three years remaining on his contract but did not dampen speculation he could be lured away in the future.

He said: “I’m never going to be a manager of Barcelona or Arsenal as I’m so identifiable with Tottenham or Espanyol.

“My commitment to this club is massive. I always work like I want to be here for the rest of my life. That is my responsibility, how I take my job. It’s the best way to commit to your job.

“I’m working to be here forever but like a player you never know what’s going to happen in football.

“The chairman can change his mind and say out. Tomorrow Daniel Levy could say ‘Mauricio, I’m going to sack you’.”

Pochettino, who takes his side to League Two Newport tomorrow, remains realistic and said: “You never know as football is so unstable.

“It was different for Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger. They were the symbols of their clubs.”
