Hall rules for Rhinos

surprisingly easily, affording space to Myler and his new half-back partner Joel Moon.

Moon flighted a clever kick behind the Warrington defence and Jones-Buchanan showed impressive strength to catch the ball and ground it for a 14th-minute opener.

New Leeds captain Kallum Watkins added a conversion and self-belief surged through McDermott’s men.

Jones-Buchanan is the only remaining player in the Leeds squad to have been involved with all eight of their Grand Final wins and this campaign is surely his last before he retires. Nevertheless, his try was a reminder of his worth and five minutes later Leeds struck again through Hall.

Myler, a constant menace to his erstwhile employers, kicked to the left corner and the imposing Hall could not be stopped as he barrelled over the line. Watkins soon added a penalty to make it 12-0 but then Warrington finally woke up.

Hughes was denied in the left corner before the Wolves got off the mark in the 31st minute when Goodwin drove through the heart of the Leeds defence inside the left channel to score a fine debut try. Goodwin converted his own score and a 12-6 interval score left the game firmly in the balance before Hall took centre stage to give Leeds breathing space with his scintillating long-range score.

Warrington pushed hard to get back in the game but some obstinate defending, not least from young Walker, kept them at bay time and time again.

Tom Lineham claimed a consolation score for the hosts in the closing stages – but it was Leeds’ night.

FETULI TALANOA scored three tries as Hull FC beat Huddersfield Giants 38-12.
