Catherine the grate!

- By Richard Palmer Royal Correspondent

THE Duchess of Cambridge put her foot in it yesterday when she got her heel trapped in a grate.

Kate, who is six months pregnant with her third child, was caught as she arrived to open an addiction treatment centre in Wickford, Essex.

The mishap occurred as she was greeted by the Vice Lord Lieutenant of Essex, Jonathan Douglas-Hughes, who famously fell over when he met Kate and Prince William at a secondary school in Harlow, Essex, in 2016.

Mr Douglas-Hughes said: “I reminded her [about the fall].

“My wife told her that she would ensure I didn’t do it again.

“Then she caught her heel. She said, ‘Uh-oh, the same as you.’”

Kate, who has been the patron of charity Action On Addiction since 2012, managed to get her shoe released before proceeding with her visit.

The Duchess, 36, wore a blue coat from fashion label Goat to open the charity’s centre, which hosts a rolling cycle of nine week-long self-help addiction recovery programmes called Clouds In The Community.

The programmes treat all forms of addiction, including alcoholism, drugs, gambling, sex and food-related disorders.

Kate took part in a round table discussion with addiction experts and met people being helped by the charity, before unveiling a plaque and making a speech. The Duchess, who made addiction one of the first issues she became involved in because of the way it affects families, described the charity as having a “very special place” for her. She said: “I believe so passionately in community projects.”

Patients also told of their experiences. Colin, 37, from Tilbury, who is being treated for alcohol addiction, said: “This place has basically saved my life.”

Suzanne, 33, from Chelmsford, who is being treated for cocaine and alcohol addiction, said: “Addicts are overlooked sometimes and it is a big problem in Britain.

“There are a lot of addicts that haven’t received help.”
