Lord Janner’s son to sue over abuse claims

- By Cyril Dixon

THE barrister son of the late Lord Janner threatened to bring a private prosecution yesterday against the man at the centre of discredited Westminster child abuse claims.

Daniel Janner QC vowed to take the self-styled whistleblower known as “Nick” to court over rape allegations he made about his father.

His intervention came after it emerged that police have charged Nick himself with paedophile offences including possession of indecent images of children. Mr Janner attacked the Crown Prosecution Service officials for their delay in pursuing Nick and vowed to do their job for them. “Nick accused my late father of raping him,” he said. “He must now be prosecuted for his lies.”

Nick claimed he was abused by a VIP paedophile gang who preyed on children in London. His extraordinary allegations sparked Operation Midland, in which police officers investigated several alleged murders as well as the sexual offences. Among those implicated were former Tory MP Harvey Proctor, ex-chief of defence staff Lord Bramall, and the late Tory prime minister Edward Heath and home secretary Leon Brittan.

But the £2.5million inquiry was scrapped without charges being brought and Scotland Yard apologised to targets including Lord Bramall and Mr Proctor, plus widow Lady Brittan. Then police commissioner Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe said: “They have all suffered as a result of the investigation and our description of the allegations as credible and true. We shouldn’t have said this.”

Mr Janner said his father, who died three years ago, was among those wrongly accused. “I’m concerned my father was named by Nick, so I’m going to prosecute him if the CPS don’t,” he said.

“He associated Lord Janner with the group who physically and sexually assaulted and raped him. This delay is totally wrong, it’s extraordinary and smacks of a cover-up.” Mr Proctor said: “I believe the Home Secretary, if not the Prime Minister, should set up an independent inquiry into the issue of anonymity. We can’t rely upon the police to police themselves on this matter.”

A CPS spokesman said: “In June 2017 a man was charged with four counts of making indecent images of children, one count of possessing indecent images of children and one count of voyeurism.

“The man has pleaded not guilty to all charges and the matter is due for trial before the Crown Court.”
