Unsworth will stay at Toffees

- Gideon Brooks

THE players’ union has offered to help Riyad Mahrez and Leicester end their stand-off.

The Professional Footballers’ Association is monitoring the situation after Mahrez, right, skipped training after a move to Manchester City collapsed.

The Algerian, who had handed in a transfer request, is expected to miss the league trip to City on Saturday. DAVID UNSWORTH has rejected the chance to become Oxford manager, deciding to stay in charge of Everton’s title-winning Under-23s.

The Toffees reserves coach had a six-week stint as first-team caretaker boss last November.

But despite having the chance to move into senior management full-time, Unsworth will continue to work with Everton’s impressive academy set-up.

Craig Bellamy is the new favourite to succeed Pep Clotet, who was dismissed a fortnight ago following a poor run for the League One side.

Across Merseyside, Liverpool’s Emre Can appeared closer to an Anfield exit with reports in Italy suggesting he has agreed, in principle, to a move to Juventus.

The German midfielder is out of contract at the end of the season and Italian agent Federico Pastorello said: “Emre Can is a huge coup, even more so because he’ll arrive on a free. Important signals are coming from him.” WIGAN owner Dave Whelan has agreed in principle to sell the club to Hong Kong-based International Entertainment Corporation. Whelan, 81, left, has entered into an exclusivity agreement with IEC, whose main interests lie in the hotel and casino industry. IEC confirmed its interest to the Hong Kong Stock Exchange on Sunday. ●POLICE are investigating “possible financial irregularities” at Hartlepool. Fans of the struggling National League side have been holding fundraisers.
