Cheryl and Helen reign supreme

- By Richard Palmer Royal Correspondent

PRINCE Charles welcomed new mum Cheryl Tweedy and Dame Helen Mirren to a reception at St James’s Palace last night for his Prince’s Trust.

Looking svelte in a dazzling floor-length satin gown, Cheryl, whose son Bear by singer Liam Payne will be one next month, won admiring glances from guests at the reception in the state apartments.

She and Dame Helen were at the palace to raise money for Invest in Futures, which encourages financiers to help the trust get disadvantaged young people into work, training or set up their own business.

Cheryl, 34, who greeted the heir to the throne with a casual “Hi” and Dame Helen, 72, both made speeches as celebrity ambassadors for the trust.

Other guests included model Neelam Gill, singer Beverley Knight, former football manager Harry Redknapp, and TV presenter Katie Piper.

They met young people who have benefited from the All Worth It programme, a partnership with L’Oreal Paris, to help 10,000 young people improve their confidence.

Since 1976 the Prince’s Trust has helped 870,000 young people move into work, training or education.

Dame Helen told guests: “I think we can all relate to having moments of self-doubt. I certainly experience moments to this day. In fact even today, maybe, just before I came up on this podium.

“I always say building selfconfidence is a journey. It doesn’t happen overnight and I am still on this journey.”

Charles chatted at length with singer Sir Tom Jones, who said: “It is a wonderful thing that a member of the Royal Family has set up a charity like this and is still clearly passionate about what he is doing.

“Young people need chances like this, particularly when they come from difficult backgrounds.”
