Million-pound homes soar by a quarter in booming market

-

But Guildford in Surrey is identified as the biggest property hotspot outside London, with 5,889 homes valued at more than £1million.

And there are more in the town than across the whole of Wales, which has just 2,223.

This was followed by the university towns of Cambridge (5,530) and Reading (5,421).

There are a total of 12,552 in the North-west, 4,835 in the Northeast with 6,845 in the East Midlands.

House values rose 3.9 per cent in 2017 — more than even the most optimistic market experts had predicted in 2016, according to mortgage lender Halifax.

And website Prime Economics says prices have risen from an average of £62,333 to £247,000 since 1993 – about 400 per cent.

Other hotspots include Oxford, St Albans, Bristol and Edinburgh.

But Walton-on-Thames, which like Guildford is in Surrey, has just 1,999 properties with the golden price tag.

Cheltenham, Glos, and Dorking, also Surrey, also have a scarcity of million-plus properties with both registering just over 2,000.

And in Beaconsfield, Bucks, while not top of the rankings for quantity of property millionaires, proportionally nearly half (49 per cent) of homes there fall into the high-end price bracket.

Within the capital, the borough of Westminster cashes in with the highest number of property millionaires (54,231), which make up 49 per cent of the area’s homes.

Royal Kensington and Chelsea is in second place (45,366) and Camden is third (37,908).

The outer-London borough of Barking and Dagenham is home to the fewest million-pound homes with just 20 – just 0.03 per cent of the total housing market.

The research was released to mark the launch of a property calculator tool, million-poundcalculator.zoopla.co.uk
