Arctic blast sparks new health warning

- By Nathan Rao

FREEZING conditions through next week have prompted fresh health warnings for people to take extra care during cold weather.

Government officials yesterday extended a winter health alert amid predictions of below average temperatures into March.

Before the cold snap, the South enjoyed mild conditions yesterday while the North was still in the grip of winter.

The Met Office has issued severe weather warnings for snow and ice in Scotland and North-east England today.

A separate alert is in place across a broader swathe of northern and central Britain tomorrow morning.

Public Health England government forecasters have extended a cold weather health alert until Tuesday. It warns elderly and vulnerable people to take extra care as bitter northerly winds keep temperatures below freezing.

Met Office forecaster Oli Claydon said polar winds will roar back later this weekend.

He said: “Saturday is not looking very nice with heavy and persistent rain and wind forecast. Showers could be wintry in parts.

“Then we are back into a polar maritime air mass on Sunday with sleet and snow possible to lower levels further south.

“Next week is still cold and looking unsettled. Tuesday could be a notable day as low pressure moves across the country, bringing wind and heavy rain.”
