Breathe in...9ft wide house for sale at £225k

- By Sarah O’Grady Property Correspondent

ONE of the narrowest cottages in Britain has come on the market ideal for a homebuyer keen to squeeze on to the property ladder.

The Doll’s House, in the fishing village of Porthleven, Cornwall, measures just nine feet across at its widest and two feet at its narrowest.

The one-bedder was built across what used to be an alleyway between two other houses.

Despite the tiny size, the 339sq ft home boasts a big asking price of £225,000 – although that is reduced from last year’s £250,000.

According to the estate agents, it has “some very unusually shaped rooms” and its small size “provides a snug warm feeling”.

Thanks to its quirky character and idyllic location, the little house once served as a local museum named the Box and Heater.

It was renamed The Dolls House by the current owners who have rented it as a £515-a-week holiday home with views over the beach and harbour framed by the Lizard peninsula.

Pete Courtis, owner of estate agents The Mather Partnership, said: “It’s a very unusual property and its origins have been lost in the mists of time.

“It’s more than 100 years old, and there’s no one around to tell us who built it and why. It would be a fascinating research project.

“It’s basically built in an alley, the builders put a roof on and constructed the inner walls.

“It isn’t a family home. However, the village is very lively and bustling and I think it will be bought by a single buyer or a couple.”
