As City burn
Gundogan and Danilo off target with shots and Aguero seeing an effort kept out by a flying save.
But the half ended in controversy with Delph redcarded for a reckless challenge on Max Power before Guardiola confronted Cook in the technical area after the Wigan boss had a go at Aguero.
Referee Anthony Taylor initially produced a yellow for the challenge and Guardiola appeared to be angry with Cook for egging the fourth official on to get the colour of the card changed.
Wigan had done what many Premier League teams have failed to do this season – stop City from scoring in the 45 minutes – and it clearly rattled Guardiola, who continued his dispute with Cook as they went down the tunnel.
Following Delph’s dismissal, Guardiola was forced into a half-time reshuffle. Winger Leroy Sane was sacrificed as Walker came on at right back with Danilo switching to the left to fill the gap left by Delph.
Without Leroy Sane’s pace, City’s attacking options were more limited and in the early stages of the half they struggled to penetrate.
The longer the tie wore on, the more Wigan grew in confidence and the crowd got behind them.
And Guardiola was forced to send on De Bruyne for David Silva in the 64th minute in the hope he could work his magic, but to no avail.
