Own hair and teeth? Lady Luck must have smiled on you

- By Sarah O’Grady Social Affairs Correspondent

BRITAIN is a nation of lucky people – and the luckiest of us still have our own hair and teeth, a survey found.

Almost half of Britons (46 per cent) consider themselves fortunate in life, with just one in 10 saying Lady Luck never smiles on them.

A solid upbringing, owning your own home and a great relationship with a “soulmate” featured high in a list of reasons to feel lucky compiled by 1,500 adults.

The poll for Grosvenor Casinos found that 62 per cent believe some people have all the luck, while 59 per cent said others land on their feet no matter what life throws at them.

Other trappings of a charmed life include a healthy bank balance, owning your car outright, landing a dream job and being able to enjoy a night out without making a fool of yourself. A happy-go-lucky attitude and being able to eat anything without putting on weight were also seen as indicators of a lucky person.

The typical adult gets five lucky breaks a year, the survey found, but six in 10 say they wish they were luckier when it came to finances.

Half of those quizzed considered themselves very lucky in love.

But 30 per cent complained that their love life was nothing short of disastrous.

When it comes to career success, just over a quarter of Britons are simply waiting for their lucky break, and 30 per cent said they could do with a bit of luck when it comes to health.

A go-getting 31 per cent of those surveyed believe you make your own luck in life.

And 58 per cent are annoyed when people describe them as lucky when they have worked hard to achieve some of life’s nicer things.

Overall though, the average Briton felt life was a mixture of 70 per cent hard work and 30 per cent luck.

And in a nod to tradition, it emerged that the nation’s luckiest number is still seven.

Caroline Webb, of Grosvenor Casions, said: “It has been really interesting to see what we all consider to be lucky.

“Often it really is the simple things in life that people prize the most.”

SO that’s all it takes: a good-looking partner, your own teeth and hair and you’re set up for life. Almost half the nation think they have this, which makes Britain a happy country, a far cry from the constant complaints we hear about what a grim nation we are turning into. It’s true, to be born British is still to win the lottery of life.
