Let off jail, daughter who stripped kindly parents of their life savings

- By Paul Jeeves

A GREEDY daughter who stripped her elderly parents of their life savings after her marriage broke down should be behind bars, her furious family said.

Mother-of-six Andrea Casson Wilson, 48, stole about £15,000 from Nancy and John Battye, leaving them surviving on just £200 a week, a court was told.

She has now been shunned by her family, who say they will appeal against her suspended sentence.

Philip Adams, prosecuting, told Leeds Crown Court Mr and Mrs Battye, in their mid-70s, had savings of £9,000 and a current account with £10,000. But last October Mrs Battye found just £1.83 savings and the current account overdrawn by £883.

Detectives estimated the couple had spent around £4,000, but the rest was stolen by their daughter.

The court heard Casson-Wilson divorced in 2015 and moved back with her parents in Holmfirth, West Yorkshire, with a £20,000 debt.

Ashleigh Metcalfe, mitigating, said Casson-Wilson “has had a life of debt and living on the breadline through her own wrongdoings and spending habits”.

Casson-Wilson, a hotel food and beverage superviser, received a suspended two-year jail term after pleading guilty to theft. She was also ordered to repay £12,600, complete 200 hours of unpaid work and attend a 15-day rehabilitation course.

The couple’s granddaughter Charlotte Senior said: “We will be appealing as jail would have been a more appropriate punishment.

“She is not sorry for what she has done and my poor grandparents are heartbroken.”
