Trump defends his call to arm US teachers
DONALD Trump yesterday clarified his controversial call to arm teachers after last week’s school massacre.
Giving more details of his hugely controversial plan, the President said guns would only be issued to teachers with military or special training.
But despite a huge backlash against the idea, he claimed the move “would solve the problem instantly”.
Mr Trump, who has continued to back the rights of the gun lobby, raised the idea of arming teachers during an hour-long discussion on Wednesday with students who survived the attack at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.
A total of 17 students and staff members were killed in the massacre.
Mr Trump wrote on Twitter: “Highly trained, gun adept, teachers/coaches would solve the problem instantly, before police arrive. GREAT DETERRENT!” But he then went on to clarify his proposals in a series of further tweets yesterday morning saying: “I never said ‘give teachers guns’ like was stated on Fake News @ CNN & @NBC.
“What I said was to look at the possibility of giving concealed guns to gun-adept teachers with military or special training experience – only the best. 20% of teachers, a lot, would now immediately fire back if a savage sicko came to a school with bad intentions”.
Mr Trump also yesterday hinted at a clampdown on “violent” video games and “disgusting” movies.
He said: “I’m hearing more and more people say the level of violence in video games is really shaping young people’s thoughts. And then you go the further step, and that’s the movies.”
