I want a top job says Edwards

- Alex Bywater

WALES assistant Shaun Edwards has used the build-up to tomorrow’s clash with Ireland to emphasise his determination to return to a head coach role in union or league.

Edwards, defence lieutenant to Warren Gatland, will go head-to-head with former Wigan teammate Andy Farrell in Dublin tomorrow.

The pair are two of the finest defensive minds in world rugby, but Edwards – who missed out to Farrell on the last two Lions tours – made a surprising job pitch when asked about any improvements Farrell had made at Ireland.

“Andy has turned himself into an outstanding coach,” said Edwards, right. “But I stick my record up against anybody in world rugby. The only person who has won more trophies than me is Wayne Smith and he is an absolute legend of coaching.

“I’ve won thirteen major trophies – ten as an assistant and three as a head coach.”

Gatland’s Welsh tenure will end after next year’s World Cup, leaving the future unclear for those under him. Wales have narrowed their shortlist to find Gatland’s successor and it is understood Edwards is not being considered. “I have been an assistant coach for eight years now because I wanted to be involved in international rugby,” said Edwards. “If I get an offer as a head coach in rugby league or rugby union, I will listen to it.”

His immediate priority will be to keep Ireland’s attack quiet, with Wales needing a win to keep alive their championship hopes.

“I have huge respect for Andy and I would like to think he has the same,” said Edwards. “But come Saturday we are opponents.”
