Meghan shock at anguish of war veterans
PRINCE Harry told yesterday how he and fiancee Meghan Markle met traumatised war veterans whose stories “shocked us to our core”.
Harry, who served two tours of duty in Afghanistan as a forward air controller and then an Apache helicopter co-pilot gunner, showed Meghan the work he has been doing to help service members.
Respect
It was part of a programme of visits by actress Meghan, 36, to get to know the charity sector across Britain.
Harry, 33, took Meghan to Colchester Garrison in Essex last month, where the couple met former servicemen and women with mental health problems.
The prince told the Veterans’ Mental Health Conference at King’s College London: “For me, this issue is personal. My time in the Army gave me the strongest respect for Harry showed Meghan his charity work everyone who wears the uniform. It is a community I am proud to belong to, and I will always seek out any way that I can to support it. “I have seen those I have served with suffer, struggling to seek out the help they desperately need. And we know there are more just like them who continue to suffer in silence. “And when the individual doesn’t or can’t reach out for help, it is also their families who suffer, especially their spouses and children who are left feeling desperate and confused. “Some of the stories Meghan and I heard when we visited Colchester Garrison a few weeks ago shocked us to our core.” The North Essex Veterans Mental Health Network aims to give veterans all the help they need in one place. It is part of a partnership called Tils – the Transition, Intervention and Liaison Services – bringing health services under one roof.
