Heffernan leads Rovers romp
ANDREW Heffernan last night conjured a stunning victory for Hull KR that had sorry Huddersfield looking every inch relegation candidates.
The Australian centre claimed one try and created others for Adam Quinlan and Ryan Shaw as the Rovers laid down a marker of their own survival credentials.
On a cold, wet night at the John Smith’s Stadium, it was not an occasion to inspire. But after Giants secondrower Oliver Roberts collected a pass from Danny Brough to open the scoring in the seventh minute, Heffernan took control.
In the 12th minute, the 23-year-old showed delightful footwork to outfox the Huddersfield defence and dive over the line inside the right channel.
Two minutes later, Heffernan orchestrated a scintillating sequence that culminated with him sending Quinlan scampering over for a second Rovers try.
Shaw converted both and added a penalty before touching down from a clever grubber kick in the 38th minute.
Shaw again added the extras, making it 20-6 as the hosts were booed off as they headed into halftime. Huddersfield offered next to nothing and the Rovers grabbed a fourth try when prop Robert Mulhern raced 80 metres and sent James Greenwood over.
Heffernan then showed intelligence to send Shaw racing clear to complete his brace before Danny McGuire got in on the act late.
Significantly, the result lifted Tim Sheens’ men above Huddersfield and out of the dreaded bottom four.
