The mother in fight for life after being hit by bricks from a crane

- By Cyril Dixon

POLICE yesterday released the identity of the young woman fighting for her life after being crushed when a pallet of bricks fell 70ft from a crane.

She was named as newly engaged Michaela Boor, struck by the load after dropping her son at school on Tuesday her 29th birthday.

Police arrived at the scene outside the Bow Corner development in Tower Hamlets, east London, shortly after 9.30am.

The woman, lying among the bricks and broken wood, was already being tended by members of the public. A second person was also taken to hospital.

Alan Harris, who owns Revolution Karting opposite the complex, said: “I heard an almighty crash and wondered what had happened.

“I looked up and saw a pile of bricks had fallen to the floor. I just thought, ‘Oh my God, what’s happened?’

“At first I thought it was a child in a pushchair that had been hit, but it was actually a shopping buggy on its side. There was a woman pointing up and screaming, ‘Help, help, someone please call an ambulance’.

“I’m not sure if she was the woman’s friend, but she would have been standing right next to her when it happened, so she was very lucky.”

A friend of Ms Boor said: “Her family are devastated. We all are. She has ended up fighting for life in hospital on her 29th birthday.”

Bernadette Hegarty, vicar of St Paul’s church, Bow Common, said she prayed with Ms Boor. “The young woman looked very wounded,” she said.

“The Ambulance Service worked very hard and managed to bring her back. She is a well-liked member of the community. I know her to say hello to. We are all in deep shock by what has happened, as are the workers on the building site.”

Ms Boor is believed to have become engaged to her partner Andy Murgatroyd two weeks ago.

Debris

A fundraising page was set up by her bricklayer father Matthew’s employers, Maytrix Construction, for £20,000 to help the injured mother.

A Scotland Yard spokesman said: “Police in Tower Hamlets are appealing for witnesses after a woman was injured by falling debris. A man at the scene was also treated for shock.”

A Health and Safety Executive spokesman said: “Inspectors have attended the site and are making ongoing inquiries in conjunction with the Metropolitan Police.”
