We found extra joy in retirement ... as minor stars of films and TV
A HUSBAND and wife who decided to try something different in retirement have become minor movie stars.
Married since 1978, Gilbert Newton, 73, and Joy, 63, never imagined they would rub shoulders with Hollywood greats in their golden years.
But the couple have now worked on nearly 100 films, TV shows, commercials and promotions since signing up to become extras.
Gilbert, a former sales executive, and Joy, an ex-teacher, from Lewisham, south-east London, say they love their new jobs so much they have no time for hobbies.
Gilbert has appeared in films such as Genius, Florence Foster Jenkins and Kingsman: The Golden Circle, starring alongside Jeff Bridges and Halle Berry. He has also appeared in Netflix blockbuster The Crown.
Joy has made diverse appearances in shows such as Holby City, as well starring in an advert shown during last year’s American Football Super Bowl.
Gilbert said: “When we tell people what we do everyone thinks it’s great.
“I’m the sort of chap who likes to keep fit and occupied and this type of work has given me a new life. Even if you have to go to the job at 4am in the morning I don’t mind.” The couple, who have two daughters, one of whom is a trained actress, travel mostly around the capital for the work.
Joy said: “We’re not going to become millionaires but we do get paid for it.”
William Bembridge, from Uni-versalEXTRAS, said: “It’s a great way to earn extra income in an exciting industry, whether in retirement like Gilbert and Joy, during studies or around a part-time job.
“We work with adults of all ages and backgrounds – don’t assume you’re not suitable.”
