Accrington joy at promotion

- Tim Nash

ACCRINGTON Stanley clinched promotion to League One last night with a 2-0 victory over Yeovil.

Two first-half goals from striker Billy Kee put the League Two leaders into the third tier for the first time, 50 years after they reformed.

Yeovil twice threatened as Alex Fisher sent a looping header over the bar before Rhys Browne forced a diving save from keeper Aaron Chapman. But Stanley settled down and after Jimmy Dunne dragged his shot wide, Kee pounced with a nearpost header from Sean McConville’s corner in the 26th minute. Two minutes later it was 2-0 when Kee grabbed his 25th goal of the season, bundling home from six yards after keeper Jon Maddison fumbled Jordan Clark’s shot.

Stanley went close to grabbing a third goal when Scott Brown’s low drive was deflected wide. After the break Kee went close to his hat-trick three times, while Kayden Jackson, McConville and Mark Hughes also had chances for dominant Stanley. SWANSEA’S on-loan midfielder Renato Sanches is set for a return to action to aid the club’s bid for Premier League survival. The Portugal international, left. has not featured for the Swans since the end of January because of a hamstring injury and has been receiving treatment at parent club Bayern Munich. Sanches, 20, has played 15 matches for Swansea, who are five points above the drop zone.

THE Football League has dropped charges against AFC Wimbledon stemming from the club’s failure to acknowledge bitter rivals MK Dons by their correct name.
