A bridge too far, for Boris

-

BORIS Johnson was yesterday cold-shouldered by Theresa May after he urged the Government to consider building a road bridge between Scotland and Northern Ireland.

The Foreign Secretary re-tweeted an article that praised the idea as the kind of “big bold project” that would exemplify “national renewal” after Brexit. Scottish architect Professor Alan Dunlop, of Liverpool University, has said the new link could create a “Celtic powerhouse”, and estimates the cost at £25billion.

A source close to Mr Johnson said: “Boris thinks this is an interesting idea which should be looked at more seriously.”

But the Prime Minister’s spokesman said simply: “I’m not aware of any plans for a bridge.”

And Labour deputy leader Tom Watson tweeted: “Boris Johnson proposes a ‘Brexit bridge’ to Northern Ireland. He wasted millions on the failed London Garden Bridge project and then trolled himself by proposing a bridge to France.

“It’s time we introduced a ‘three bridges and you’re out’ rule.”
