No longer judging these books by their covers

Daily Express - - FREDERICK FORSYTH -

THE Miss America beauty pageant is being modernised. Well, thank heavens for that.

The parade of gorgeous young women in swimsuits and high heels is being abolished to be replaced one assumes by the tractor driver segment for dungarees and boiler suits. At last, something realistic and improving.

And the evening-gown segment is also to go. Together those two elements occupied 25 per cent of the beauty contest.

They will be replaced by conversations between the young women and the achingly correct judges during which the contestants can demonstrate their mental supremacy and nobility of character.

Sounds about as jolly as the old Soviet march-pasts.
