‘Alarm’ as banks axe branches
NEARLY 60 bank and building society branches are shutting every month, research has revealed.
Consumer champion Which? said between the start of 2015 and the end of 2018, 2,868 branches had either closed or were due to close.
This year 670 branches have closed or are earmarked for closure.
Which? said NatWest had the most closures – 638 branches shut or due to close by the end of this year – followed by HSBC (440), Lloyds (366) and RBS (350).
Scotland has seen 368 branches axed since 2015, or being due to close by the end of 2018.
Which? Money expert Gareth Shaw said: “Bank branch closures are happening at an alarming rate.”
