Elvis’s drum­mer Fon­tana dies at 87

ELVIS Pres­ley’s drum­mer DJ Fon­tana, who played on clas­sic hits such as Jail­house Rock, Hound Dog and Heart­break Ho­tel, has died aged 87.

The US mu­si­cian, whose real name was Do­minic Joseph, died on Wednesday his son David con­firmed.

Fon­tana be­gan his ca­reer along­side Elvis in the 1950s, along with gui­tarist Scotty Moore and Bill Black on bass.

They formed The Blue Moon Boys and sup­ported Elvis in his early years un­til 1958. De­spite the group break­ing up Fon­tana con­tin­ued to play and record with the mu­sic icon in the 1960s. Elvis died in 1977, aged 42.

Fon­tana was in­ducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2009 and ap­peared in four of Pres­ley’s films – Jail­house Rock, Lov­ing You, King Cre­ole and G.I. Blues. He leaves be­hind a wife, Karen.
