Stars have rootin’ tootin’ footie ball

- By Gillian Crawley

ENGLAND’S World Cup stars have teamed up with James Corden in a hilarious sketch for his US Late Late Show.

Before flying to Russia, captain Harry Kane, Dele Alli, Jamie Vardy, Jesse Lingard, Kyle Walker and Eric Dier filmed a spoof where Corden pitches them his big idea – to recruit US fans to support England in the tournament.

The US failed to qualify for the World Cup and in the video, released yesterday, Corden tells the England players millions of football fans are ripe for the taking.

In a bid to convince his audience to back England, the former Gavin & Stacey star decides to play on America’s love of the Royal Family.

Touchdown

Tottenham striker Kane tells viewers he would become their “third favourite Harry” after Prince Harry and Harry Styles. “Hang on, we’re forgetting Harry Potter,” Corden interrupts, only to get an eye-roll. “Potter? He’s not even real,” says Kane.

And horror of horrors, Corden also suggests calling the “beautiful game” soccer, like the Americans. Manchester City’s Walker refuses point blank to say it and Tottenham’s Alli, wearing a ridiculous Statue of Liberty outfit, storms off, saying: “I’m not doing it. I feel stupid.”

And Manchester United star Lingard’s “touchdown dance” and Vardy’s excruciating cowboy accent fails to impress funnyman Corden, who asks: “Is that your American accent?” “Darn tootin’ it is,” replies Leicester City’s Vardy.

In 2009 Corden made a Comic Relief video with the then England squad as his Gavin & Stacey character Smithy, lecturing David Beckham, Rio Ferdinand and Frank Lampard on raising their game.
