Shops and cafes thriving in UK’s fastest-growing city

- By Paul Jeeves

THE summer feelgood factor is certainly resonating in Leeds – the UK’s fastest growing city – providing additional impetus to an already thriving £54.6billion economy.

While financial and business services account for 38 per cent of the city’s total output, other key sectors such as retail, leisure and tourism have boomed due to the weeks of sunshine.

Former MasterChef finalist Matt Healy believes it was the perfect time to open his new restaurant. He said: “Since we opened at the beginning of May footfall has surpassed all expectations.

“The city is busier than ever and locals and visitors alike are taking advantage of the glorious weather on our outdoor terrace.”

Andrew Creese, general manager at the Dakota Deluxe hotel, said: “Leeds feels more like a European city than a place in northern England these days.

“We’ve got a wonderful waterfront, great galleries and museums, bars, restaurants and pavement cafes.”

Paula Dillon, president of Leeds Chamber of Commerce, said the city had received a boost from hosting England’s World Cup warm-up match against Costa Rica.

Ryan Murray, store manager at JTF Leeds, said: “We have seen a real surge in sales of outdoor living, garden products and beer, wines and spirits over the few weeks.”
