Anger as residents are given fines for parking on their own driveways

- By Krishan Davis

MORE than 100 people have been given parking tickets on their own driveways.

The drives were installed between a pathway in front of their semi-detached homes and the roadway in 2016 so a new bus route could be created.

Residents were told they could use the driveways if they did not cause obstructions.

But a warden sent to deal with a complaint about one car being illegally parked in the street in Bristol visited the area on Sunday and issued tickets to every vehicle.

One anonymous resident said: “The traffic warden went down and ticketed every car on every driveway. There are more than 100. I want the council to do whatever it takes so we can park on our drives.

“The alternative is 100 households parking in side roads.

“We were told by all the authorities involved that we would be allowed to park.

“Something’s gone wrong somewhere.”

Two years ago, the road was closed for about six months so it could be widened to accommodate the Metrobus South Bristol Link road. Despite re-opening last year, the road has yet to be used by a bus.

Bristol City Council said: “A local resident reported a vehicle that was illegally parked, blocking the shared-use path.

“In response, we sent out a civil enforcement officer to investigate.

“There is currently an agreement in place which should allow residents to park on the drive area of the pavement as long as they aren’t on the public grass verge, blocking the main pavement or shared-use path.”
