Rapper Tinchy Stryder, who collaborat­ed with the brothers on a charity song called To Me, To You (Bruv) in 2014, wrote on Twitter: “Funny, down to earth, super cool, talented, humble legend. Rest in peace Barry Chuckle!”

Take Me Out presenter Paddy McGuinness tweeted: “One of my favourites from childhood years, teenage years and as an adult! Gutted. Barry Chuckle RIP sir.”

CBeebies presenter Chris Jarvis wrote on social media: “On screen he was hilarious, on stage even more so but off stage Barry was also the kindest of gentlemen. RIP Barry. ”

Boxing legend Frank Bruno wrote: “Very sad news this morning. A very funny man, you’ve left happy memories for so many people ‘To me to you’ RIP.”

Comic David Walliams said “I never got over being completely starstruck at seeing the brothers but always found them to be generous, kind and most of all FUNNY. Barry had funny bones. He could have you in hysterics with just a look.”

The brothers received a Bafta Special Award in 2008 for their contributi­on to children’s television.

A tribute from Rotherham United FC, which made the brothers honorary presidents in 2007, read: “Everyone at #rufc are deeply saddened this morning to learn of the passing of our life president, supporter and friend Barry “Chuckle” Elliott, aged 73.”

Barry and Paul were born in Rotherham and began their careers after winning talent show Opportunit­y Knocks in 1967. They also won talent show New Faces in 1974. The family’s statement added the star “leaves 50 years of laughter as his legacy”.
