Brad and Angelina were once Hollywood’s golden couple A WAR of words has broken out between Hollywood star Brad Pitt and ex-wife Angelina Jolie after his friends denied he was a “deadbeat dad” and paid “far more” in child support than she had alleged.
Pitt’s pals rallied behind him after Jolie, 43, claimed he had made no “meaningful” contributions for the care of their six children, in divorce papers filed with a court.
Sources close to the Ocean’s Eleven star told US celebrity website Page Six that Pitt, 54, had been paying out hundreds of thousands of pounds every month on therapists for the youngsters, as well as travel expenses and round-theclock bodyguards.
They also accused Jolie of trying to smear him by making him out to be a “deadbeat dad”. The couple split when Jolie filed for divorce in September 2016, citing irreconcilable differences and ending their 11-year relationship.
The break-up came amid allegations that Pitt had been “rough” with one of their children on a private plane. He was investigated but cleared of any wrongdoing. Divorce proceedings are understood to have ground to a halt over disagreements about how much time Pitt gets with their six children – Maddox, 16, Pax, 14, Zahara, 13, Shiloh, 12, Vivienne and Knox, both 10.
Commitments
Pitt’s friends spoke out after the actress filed papers in a public court this week accusing her ex of failing to support their children financially since the split.
One source said: “The divorce case has been held in front of a private judge to keep it out of the press.
“But she filed in LA Superior Court knowing that it would go public and that he would be made out to be a deadbeat dad, which he isn’t.”
Another added: “Brad has completely lived up to his commitments as far as child support, and will continue to do so.” One source close to Pitt said the actor had provided financial support to an amount “far more than any informal agreement would stipulate and far more than any judge would have ordered paid if there had been such an order”.
The filed papers state: “Given the informal arrangements around the payment of the children’s expenses have not been regularly sustained by [Pitt] for over a year and a half, [Jolie] intends to file an RFO [Request for Order] for the establishment of a retroactive child support order.”
Jolie has also asked the judge to arrange a meeting to discuss the issues.
A spokesman for the actress confirmed that she wants “closure to the marriage in a way that clears a path toward the next stage of their lives and allows her and Brad to recommit as devoted co-parents to their children”.
Jolie’s net worth has been estimated at about £100million, and she was ranked the 74th highest-earning celebrity by Forbes. The same organisation puts Pitt’s net worth at almost double hers.
