‘Wonderful athlete’ a big threat

- By Neil McLeman

CHRIS HUGHTON has warned that “wonderful” Paul Pogba is set to bring his World Cup-winning form to the Premier League this season.

The France star has been branded a “nightmare” by Manchester United legend Paul Ince for his attitude since returning from Russia.

But ahead of the visit of last year’s title runners-up to the Amex Stadium tomorrow, the Seagulls manager insisted the £89million midfielder’s on-field potential is a big threat to Brighton, while his ability to break forward from the middle of the park can give defences sleepless nights.

“He’s a very good player,” said Hughton. “We have to be guarded against that, tactically. He’s showed that in the summer, he showed that in good periods at United.

“He’s very much capable of having a good season. He is 6ft 2ins, a wonderful athlete, can break from midfield and what he has shown is that he’s got a passing ability. If you’re looking at his technical abilities, he’s a wonderful all-round footballer.”

Pogba and Jose Mourinho are suffering a strained relationship, despite claims to the contrary by the latter.

But, speaking about the situation, Hughton said: “It’s just part and parcel of a manager’s role. Our main responsibility is to win football matches but around that, you have to manage a team of players. There are good moments, bad moments, easier moments, tougher moments.”

Brighton will be attempting an unlikely hat-trick of home triumphs over Manchester United, following last season’s win that guaranteed Premier League survival – and a victory in the old First Division back in November 1982.

Speaking about the May win, Hughton said: “We will need to get to those levels again and take inspiration.”
