Hastings red hot for Devils

- ROSS HEPPENSTALL

JACKSON HASTINGS arrived at Salford in July with a reputation as a troublemaker.

But he is fast earning cult status among Red Devils supporters.

The Australian was thrown out of Manly Sea Eagles in June after off-field incidents.

Salford handed him a deal until the end of this season and Hastings was again star man with two of their 12 tries in yesterday’s demolition of Championship parttimers Halifax.

It was Salford’s third straight win in the Qualifiers and boosted their hopes of signing Hastings permanently.

Head coach Ian Watson said: “Time will tell if we can keep Jackson but we’ve asked the club to give

HALIFAX SALFORD

us the best shot we can of doing so.

“He’s really keen on us securing our Super League future before moving forward.”

Tries from Hastings, Ed Chamberlain, Derrell Olpherts (two), Ben Nakubuwai and Kris Welham helped Watson’s men into a 30-4 half-time lead.

Second-half scores from Olpherts, Lama Tasi, Junior Sa’u (two), Hastings and Josh Wood completed a handsome victory.

Halifax are pointless and their misery was compounded by injuries to key forwards Jordan Baldwinson and Simon Grix. MATT WALLACE pressed his claims for a Ryder Cup wild card with a fourth European Tour victory in 19 months in the final qualifying event in Silkeborg.

Wallace birdied five of his last six holes to get into a play-off. Thorbjorn Olesen had earlier secured the final automatic qualifying place to face the USA at Le Golf National at the end of the month. Skipper Thomas Bjorn will name his four wild cards on Wednesday.
