Harry: So swell being here with ‘little bump’
PRINCE Harry yesterday told Maori leaders of his joy at bringing Meghan’s “little bump” to New Zealand.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex were welcomed with traditional “hongi” greetings at the Abel Tasman national park.
Harry was eager to share his excitement about visiting with a new baby on board – despite the soggy conditions.
He said: “This rain is a blessing on all of us. From myself and my wife and our little bump, we are so grateful to be here.”
The Prince told his Manawhenua Ki Mohua hosts: “We bring blessings from my grandmother the Queen and our family. We are so grateful for your hospitality and the work you do to look after this beautiful place.”
Pregnant Meghan had a seat of honour at the ceremony – in the front row but back from men on either side of her.
The custom is a sign of protection for women in the first meeting between the tribe and visitors.
Chief elder Barney Thomas explained: “We would never ever put our women in that space.
“We want to be inclusive but protective, and we would not want to put our women – especially the Duchess because she’s expecting – at risk.”
The royal couple later came face to face with fantastical characters as they took in Wellington’s arts scene.
