England hit by Tomkins blow

- JULIE STOTT

SAM TOMKINS has been ruled out of England’s bid for a 3-0 whitewash over New Zealand.

The full-back broke his hand five minutes into the 20-14 win at Anfield. He played the entire match but is out of Sunday’s Elland Road clash, taking the tally of missing stars to four.

George Burgess is banned for eye-gouging, Daryl Clark has a broken rib and captain Sean O’Loughlin is again out with a calf injury.

Coach Wayne Bennett said: “We’ll bring Richie Myler in, and Joe Greenwood and Stefan Ratchford will go on to the bench.”

A 3-0 series win will send out a message to the world that England are now a real force but Bennett said: “We have been a bit lucky – we have won by two points and six. There’s nothing in it. “We could get beaten by two points and it won’t disappoint me if we put the effort in.” Tommy Makinson completed a whirlwind five months by being named Golden Boot winner last night. The award, given to the best international star in 2018, goes to the St Helens wing after just three England games. Bennett said: “He’s been absolutely outstanding.” FORMULA ONE has reached a deal to stage a race on the streets of Vietnam’s capital. The grand prix, which will take place in Hanoi, will be staged from 2020 onwards and becomes the first new addition to the calendar in the post-Bernie Ecclestone era.

Chase Carey, chairman of F1’s American owners Liberty Media, said: “We are developing new destination cities to broaden the appeal of Formula One.”
