Wigan’s China owners in vow

- David Anderson

WIGAN’S new Hong Kong owners have vowed to build on the traditions laid down at the club by Dave Whelan.

International Entertainment Corporation finally took control yesterday in a £22million deal.

Their CEO Melvin Yan Min Zhang said: “We are extremely honoured and proud to become the custodians of Wigan Athletic FC.

“The football club’s operations and performance under the leadership of the Whelan family over a long period, together with the traditions and values of the club and its supporters, were major factors in our decision to purchase the club. We intend to build on that history and grow Wigan further to achieve both on and off the field.”

Joe Royle’s son Darren has been appointed executive chairman, while the former Everton boss becomes a director.

Jonathan Jackson remains as CEO to retain some continuity from the Whelan days. MARCELO BIELSA says his high-energy style is not contributing to Leeds’ crocked list. Luke Ayling, Gaetano Berardi, Patrick Bamford and Izzy Brown are sidelined for Saturday’s clash with West Brom. Yet manager Bielsa, left, said: “Usually as an average when you play twice a week, four men are out injured. We’re close to this average.” ●SHEFFIELD UNITED defender Chris Basham has signed a new three-and-a-half-year contract extension.
