Bedside vigil for war hero, 98, beaten up in house raid
Enfield house for more than 60 years. His wife of 65 years, Joan, died in 2013.
Former civil servant Simon said: “I don’t think anyone of his age should be subjected to this.
“He is 98 and we don’t how what form the recovery will take.
“He was careful about locking his door. He was very cautious about that. I had some difficulty getting through the door. There was nothing open in the house.”
Jane raced to London from Huddersfield, West Yorks, after receiving the shocking news of the attack on her father.
She said: “It was very upsetting. I came as soon as I could.”
Neighbours yesterday told of their fears as the thugs remain at large. One elderly resident said: “I haven’t been able to sleep like normal. If they’ve done that to Peter, why not me?” The charity Crimestoppers last night offered a reward of up to £10,000 for any information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for the attack.
Announcing the reward, Detective Inspector Paul Ridley from North Area CID, who is leading the investigation, said: “Mr Gouldstone was left for dead in his own home, a place where he should feel safest. There is no way of knowing when he would have been discovered.
“Had it not been for a member of the public raising the alarm, I believe that Mr Gouldstone would have succumbed to his injuries.
“My investigation team has been working relentlessly to trace the individuals behind this horrific attack.”
