Samson’s strength is missing

- By Neil Squires

SAMSON LEE’S autumn series is over before it has begun with the Wales prop ruled out of the remaining two Tests because of a hamstring injury.

Lee, below, who missed the opening victories over Scotland and Australia, was released back to the Scarlets yesterday.

“It’s unfortunate for Samson,” said Wales assistant coach Neil Jenkins. “He’s an outstanding player and the last few times he has been in, he has just suffered a few injuries. Likewise again this time. It’s sad to lose him.

Exeter prop Tomas Francis should be fit for Saturday’s game against Tonga despite coming off during the Australia win with a back problem.

“He’s going to be all right,” said Jenkins. “We’ll see how he goes over the next couple of days but it is just the culmination of a tough Test match.”

Wales will name their team on Thursday with a series of changes expected, including a possible elevation for fly-half Rhys Patchell, who is available after recovering from concussion.

Patchell has been out for five weeks since sustaining a head injury playing for Scarlets.

George North (dead leg) and Leigh Halfpenny (concussion), who both came off against Australia, are likely to be rested.

Ireland will be without Robbie Henshaw against New Zealand on Saturday after the Leinster centre pulled his hamstring against Argentina on Saturday.

The Irish have also ruled out scrum-half Conor Murray, who has not played since June due to a neck injury.

JOE WORSLEY has been put in temporary charge of Bordeaux after former England skills coach Rory Teague was sacked yesterday.
