Finally moved on

You phoned Brian a few days later after he was released from hospital, Tana, but that call degenerated into an argument.

Things were still a bit raw. Emotions were high and we’re very proud men. For me it has been about getting past that stubbornness. If I could do it all again, I wouldn’t have let this go for so long – that is the key lesson for me. Things that go unsaid create perceptions; dealing with things straightaway is the best way.

So if you’re best buddies now, will you be sharing a drink at the Aviva on Saturday when Ireland play New Zealand?

Unfortunately, Tana will be back in New Zealand then but when I’m at the game I’ll FaceTime him with a pint of Guinness in my hand and we can share that moment.

People are talking about Saturday’s game being a World Cup final rehearsal.

I’m cautious on being too bullish considering Ireland’s history in World Cups and never making it past the quarter-final, but this one is our great opportunity. Ireland have to prove they can add that consistency in a World Cup to consistency in the Six Nations, summer tours and November internationals.

I don’t think we can look too far ahead in terms of a World Cup final. We want to be there, that’s for sure, but we are not hitting our straps as we would like. Other sides are really putting pressure on areas where we’d normally back ourselves and we haven’t been up to the standards we’d expect.

England almost toppled the All Blacks. The $50m question: who is going to win this weekend? Rugby.

You beat me to it. Can you believe it? We’re even finishing each other’s sentences now! If either of us get married again, we’re in Best Man territory.
