Shaqiri starting to rev up at Reds

XHERDAN SHAQIRI believes the best is yet to come from him in a Liverpool shirt. The Reds midfielder has started the season in fine fashion since his summer move from Stoke but is yet to nail down a regular starting spot in Jurgen Klopp’s side.

The Kop boss has an abundance of attacking talent at his disposal but Shaqiri, who scored his second goal for the club in Sunday’s 2-0 win over Fulham, believes he will only get better. “Of course I’m confident there are more goals to come,” he said. “It’s always better if you’ve got better players around you, if you can be more offensive, if you know that you are for sure going to have more possession than the opponent.

“But also you need to be ready to train hard every day. I’m feeling good, I’m fit and I’m trying to give my best.”

Shaqiri spent three years at Stoke after a short spell with Inter Milan following his time at Bayern Munich, but now he is back playing with some of the top players in the world alongside Mo Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane.

“I played in Bayern with Franck Ribery, Arjen Robben so I knew what it’s like,” he said. “It was nothing new for me. I knew already how good these very talented players were.

“It’s different types of players because there are different coaches, they play a different type. But of course the intensity at the highest level, it’s the same at Bayern and Liverpool. When you want to be a top team, you have to be on the highest level to make your best performances.”

Liverpool’s win keeps them two points behind league leaders Manchester City but defender Virgil van Dijk insists the Reds are only focused on their own results.

“They are the champions and the best team in the league but we will try everything to be as good as we can,” he said.

“We look at what we have ahead. That is more important than looking at someone else. It is the only way forward.”
