I CAN STILL HOLD MY OWN WITH YOUNG PEOPLE

-

BERENICE Weston originally retired at 69 when she gave up running her own business.

But a year later, she returned to work as a shop assistant in an upmarket London-based Rococo Chocolate store.

Now aged 72, Mrs Weston, who commutes into the capital, earns £10 an hour working between one and two days a week.

“I think it’s important to contribute to society and remain socially connected,” she said.

“I love the product, and the nature of my role is exciting because it is something I’ve never done before.

“I’ve learned new skills like mastering the till. I had never worked a till in my life. It’s all computerised.

“I also get a sense of satisfaction that I can still work alongside young people and hold my own and make a contribution.

“It’s enjoyable realising that I can still work in the real world.

“I wanted to work flexibly so I would have time to do other things such as see my children, grandchildren and friends, and also to pursue my classes in learning French.

“I now have a better work-life balance than I ever did. My sense of well-being has improved too.

“It’s always nice to have a chat and I love the social aspect of my work.”
