100 years ago (1918)

Our front page showed British prisoners of war reunited with their friends behind Allied lines.

We told how the semi-starved men were given a “steaming drink of tea” and “square meal”.

Elsewhere, Rachel Gertrude Moseley was awarded the Military Medal for “conspicuou­s gallantry and devotion to duty as a motor ambulance car driver during military operations”.

50 years ago (1968)

The Race Relations Act made it unlawful to refuse housing, employment or public services to people on the grounds of their colour or religion. The Act also widened the scope of the Race Relations Board to deal with complaints of discrimina­tion.

26 years ago (1992)

It was announced that the Queen would be the first British monarch to pay income tax since the 1930s.

She would also take responsibi­lity for the expenses of most family members.

Since 2001 the Royal Family have published their annual accounts in an effort to make their finances more transparen­t.

35 years ago (1983)

An armed gang carried out Britain’s biggest ever robbery at Heathrow Airport. Gold bullion worth over £25million was stolen from the Brinks Mat warehouse along with diamonds worth £100,000.
