BP and Shell gained 11½p to 514¾p and 63½p to 2365p as crude jumped over 4 per cent after the Opec cartel and Russia agreed to slash production by more than expected despite pressure from US president Donald Trump to lower prices.

Tullow Oil and Cairn Energy rose 13p to 189½p and 7¾p to 167¾p, while Premier Oil was 9¾p slicker at 75¾p after a strong production performanc­e in November and so far this month.

AJ Bell soared to 220p on its first day of trading after a placing at 160p valuing the investment platform at about £651million.

Fantasy miniatures maker Games Workshop rose 130p to 3125p as it flagged half-year operating profit of about £41million on sales of £124million.

Virtual reality music content firm EVR Holdings jumped 2p to 6¼p after announcing its first live-streamed event on MelodyVR will take place on December 19, featuring former One Direction boy band member Liam Payne.

It also appointed former Universal Music finance chief Andy Brown as chief financial officer.
