Royals make move for Castro
READING have made an approach to install Luis Castro as their new manager as the cull at the Madejski Stadium continues. The Royals are ready to pay Castro’s £900,000 release clause to Portuguese club Vitoria Guimaraes after sporting director Gianluca Nani followed Paul Clement out of the club. Reading are in the hunt for a new manager after axing Clement this week following a dismal run of four wins in 20 Championship games.
Nani, who came to the club only four months ago, had wanted to appoint Steve Bruce as Clement’s replacement. But Nigel Howe, who recently returned as chief executive, picked out Castro as his top target. Reading striker Marc McNulty, meanwhile, has told his team-mates they are to blame for Clement being sacked
McNulty, whose side face his old club Sheffield United today, said: “It was a shock. I think the manager was surprised and the players were surprised as well.
“It’s disappointing. At the end of the day it’s us players who go onto the pitch and need to perform. The manager picks the team but the players have to take a bit of responsibility.”
