Remainers, careful what you wish for
TO all those gleefully rubbing their hands in anticipation of Parliament overruling the 2016 referendum result, withdrawing Article 50 and asking the European Union to pretend the last 20 months of protracted negotiations never happened and to accept the UK back into the fold, may I offer the following advice; be very careful what you wish for (“I won’t delay the big Brexit vote insists May”, December 7).
In all probability the EU will be only too willing to accept us back under the control of Brussels. However there are certain aspects of our membership that the EU hate and it will take the opportunity to remove them from us and update our membership terms in general.
The consequence would be; loss of our rebate, loss of our veto vote and a substantial increase in our financial contributions. In addition we would be required to undertake to join the eurozone. It is also highly probable that we would be required to sign the Schengen Agreement.
Welcome to the brave new world.
