Poor seasonal cover leaves you in the cold

-

THE festive period is a time for giving but it is also a time for taking, as it is peak season for household break-ins.

Yet more than half of us have no protection after failing to take out home contents insurance.

Some who do have cover may also lose out because they will stash larger presents such as bikes, jewellery and even televisions in sheds and garages, where some insurers will not cover them, especially if left unlocked.

Those who do use their outbuildings are storing on average £190 worth of Christmas presents and risk a hefty loss, according to new research from LV= General Insurance.

Managing director Heather Smith said too many people put precious Christmas gifts at risk in the home too: “Don’t leave presents on show where they might tempt burglars – keep them well out of sight.”

You should also clear away tools, ladders or other outside items that could help an opportunist thief break in.

If going away during the festive season, think twice before posting pictures on social media which could alert thieves to your absence. “Set up light timers to switch on at times you’d usually be in,” Smith said.

Most contents insurers will automatically upgrade your cover by 10 per cent during the festive period, to protect Christmas gifts and food, so check what yours does.

The average home insurance policy has fallen to £137 a year, according to Consumer Intelligence, although this rises to £183 in London.
