Saints hold a war briefing

- By Alex Crook

RALPH HASENHUTTL cancelled Southampton players’ day-off following Saturday’s defeat at Cardiff.

The Saints stars were to take Sunday off before returning to training on Monday to prepare for this Sunday’s clash at home to Arsenal.

But new hard-line manager Hasenhuttl called his entire squad to their New Forest training ground for a team meeting.

The move is understood to have been welcomed by Hasenhuttl’s players, who realise they are in a dire position after going 12 matches without a win. Saints midfielder Oriol Romeu said: “He wants us to play with a high intensity and to react a lot quicker when we lose the ball which I think will make us a better team. He wants us to change the way we’re playing.

“It’s a new mentality and a new manager with some completely different ideas.

“Once we get to play the style he wants, with the intensity he needs, I think we will be a great team.”

When he replaced Mark Hughes last week, the Austrian Hasenhuttl said his training methods would ‘blow their minds’.
