Horror of hammer raid on grandad
THIS is the shocking moment thugs forced their way into a home and smashed a grandfather repeatedly over the head with a hammer.
Brave Mick Brown, 53, is lucky to be alive after his skull was shattered during the attack after he fought back against his attackers, who left empty-handed.
CCTV pictures taken at around 7pm on Monday show two men approaching the home where Mick and his wife Yvonne, 59, were spending the evening in.
The raiders knocked on the door and charged past Yvonne, who answered thinking it was a parcel delivery.
Fractured
One of the intruders attacked grandfather-of-eight Mick with a hammer, knocking him unconscious with three blows to the head.
In the footage, Yvonne can be seen escaping the clutches of an attacker and sprinting from the house in Norley, near Wigan, Greater Manchester. She ran to a neighbour’s house to call police.
Mick, who is diabetic, remains in hospital with a swollen knee, fractured skull and bruising but doctors believe he will make a full recovery.
His stepson Stew Fleming, 41, is appealing for anyone who recognises the thugs to contact police.
He said: “They could have killed him. There were three blows to the head, another missed and Mick blocked one with his hand.
“They also tried to kneecap him to get him down but he managed to stay on his feet.
“There are people who go out to rob someone and there are people going to properly hurt someone.
“They need to be off the streets as soon as possible.”
Stew believes the men may have targeted his mother’s house because a BMW X5 and Mini Sport were parked on the driveway.
“My mum answered the door thinking it was a delivery,” added Stew. “She was confronted with two lads who pushed her inside, one of them went straight into the living room. Luckily my mum managed to get away from them.
“Meanwhile, the other guy went in and hit Mick over the head with a hammer. Mick had started getting the better of him but then the other one turned up.
“They tried to get his kneecaps with the hammer and then gave him another couple of blows to the head. They crushed his wedding ring on to his finger with one of the blows.”
Anyone with information about the outrage should contact police on 101, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
