Why it is so important to support the high street

-

NAPOLEON once described Britain as a nation of shopkeepers. He meant it as an insult but actually the drive to make money and spread capitalism was the secret of Britain’s success and meant that our country, not France, was the predominant power in the world.

The massive discounts on the high street this Christmas are great news for those of us looking for cheaper gifts, but they show that the shopping spirit is not alive and well in 2018 Britain. We need to remember that not only is shopping good for the economy but it brings us together. It is a family experience so we should get out there and support our high street shops rather than sitting on our own just clicking items on the internet.

That is why the Daily Express is campaigning to save our high streets – not only shops but cafés, restaurants and entertainment. Family fun. It is true to say that 2018 has been a tough year for the high street and shops in general, whether it is Homebase shutting the doors of many of its stores or House of Fraser closing shops.

In recent years we have lost many familiar high-street names including BHS. So in 2019 the Government needs to look at business rates and support for the high street to keep the experience alive for future generations.
