equivalent of a Fitbit will display details through a smartphone app – so owners can monitor their dogs when they are away. It will also indicate when the animal is suffering separation anxiety.

The lightweight Animo device, which costs around £60, also tracks sleep patterns.

The gadget is the brainchild of Dr Nick Hill, a quantum physicist at Cambridge University, and can be adjusted depending on the size, weight and breed.

Royal Veterinary College behaviourist Jon Bowen said: “If we monitor our dogs we can aim to make their lives better and more enjoyable. For example, identifying the activities they really like.”
