70 years wed...couple who cheated death in warzone

A COUPLE who dodged bullets in a warzone have celebrated 70 years of marriage.

Grandparents Barbara Hamilton, 95, and husband Jimmy, 96, attribute the longevity of their marriage to “tolerance” – and never going to sleep on a row.

They met at night school, then later bumped into each other at a dance.

Jimmy said: “I fell in love with Barbara from the minute I met her.”

They lived for

14 years in the British-run Colony of Aden, in what is now southern Yemen, after Barbara had a childhood fascination with the film Lawrence Of Arabia.

Mother-of-one Barbara said they shared an everyday life of snipers, landmines and grenades in the Sixties during the uprising against British rule. “We knew quite a few people who were killed,” she said. “The smell of cordite would come into the house.”

They celebrated with family at their home in Hamilton, South Lanarkshire.
